Coach Longlegs cassette release!

Unpop's latest cassette Coach Longlegs - No Dogs At Shows is released on Saturday the 14th of December 2013!

In their own words "Coach Longlegs is an emphasis on positive attitudes, friendship over musicianship. We want everyone to feel loose and feel relaxed as a way of feeling motivated and inspired. We want people to feel like they could play in a band too."

They mix indie powerpop, classic north american lofi sounds and a positive punk attitude. From St John's, Newfoundland they focus on having fun, playing shows and making music videos instead of releasing records and playing to the industry PR games

A limited run of 50 copies is available at http://unpoptapes.bandcamp.com/album/no-dogs-at-shows

The nights are drawing in, there's a chill in the air and Team Unpop are getting ready for their 4th birthday indiepop dance party!

We are super stoked to be putting on none other than The Flatmates to mark this occasion! Heroes of The Subway Organization, The Flatmates were making scuzzy punky pop hits while we were still in nappies and broke up before we were in long trousers, but we still obsessed over their old 7" singles when we were in high school and certainly never dreamt that we would get to see them play live, let alone put them on at the Wee Red.

Yet this year has seen the band reform and, having ventured south to get a sneak peek at what they look like in action at the Nottingham Pop Alldayer in September, we can promise you that you are in for a real treat seeing these guys.

Sharing the bill with them will be Edinbugh's very own indiepop superstars, The Spook School, who will have launched their shiny new Fortuna Pop! album just the week before they grace the stage at unpop. They are so hott right now and, more importantly, a ton of fun. Support also comes from Edinburgh kids Thank You So Nice.

As usual there will be indiepop dance mayhem until 3am after the bands, plus free mixtapes, badges, cakes and balloons. We know what we like and we're not about to start messing with the formula. Eff us, we're twee.

Hope you can make it on October 18th!

Summer Unpop with The Just Joans, Middle Ones and Gums

Friday 16th of August

Live sets from
The Just Joans
Middle Ones
Gums

The Wee Red Bar

Bands 7pm to 10pm,
Unpop 10pm to 3am

Mixtapes and badges for the most enthusiastic dancers!!

We are thrilled to be welcoming back Unpop favourites The Just Joans to The Wee Red Bar to headline a very exciting bill on the 16th August.

Ever since we first got our grubby mitts on a copy of Last Tango In Motherwell back in the heady days of 2005, we have been a bit in love with The Just Joans’ particular brand of gloomy, angsty indiepop. Their songs about coming of age in the 1990s in Lanarkshire are underscored by a self-aware, wry humour that balances out the inherent misery of the subject matter and makes for surprising sing-along material.

Following on from last year’s excellent LP, Buckfast Bottles In The Rain, we understand they have just finished recording a new EP and so are looking forward to hearing what they’ve got up their sleeves for us.

Support comes from awesome Bristol/Norwich-based The Middle Ones and also from GUMS, who, making EPs called things like “Antipathy” and also hailing from the West of Scotland, are perhaps in some ways musical heirs to The Just Joans.

Unpop will be playing non-stop indiepop after the bands until 3am and all this we offer you for the mere sum of £4. It might be the middle of the festival, but this is the only place you want to be on this date, believe us.

Unpop Tapes!!

Unpop is delighted two tapes. Featuring the live recordings or an Unpop gig last year.

Both are recorded on stupidly high quality chrome tape.

Only £3 and limited to 40 copies each.

The Just Joans Tape

The Just Joans are one of the most underrated bands in Scotland, producing songs that are (in equal part) maudlin and hilarious. Yet their idiosyncratic lyrical/musical vision - fusing elements of The Smiths, Arab Strap with a distinct attachment to indie pop/twee music - has made them into a cult band with a following that extends internationally, far beyond their roots in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire.

2012 debut vinyl LP release Buckfast Bottles In The Rain is a brilliant distillation of their vision, encompassing love, regret, poignancy and hope in pop-song format. Essentially, all the good stuff.

This limited edition Unpop tape documents a headline gig that the band played at the Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh to launch their record on June 16th 2012. Appropriately enough for a Scottish summer, the rain poured all evening long. The recording features classic Just Joans songs like 'Hey Boy, You're Oh So Sensitive', and 'What Do We Do Now?', as well as the dialogue between Just Joans singer David Pope and an irate, drunken cyclist.

The Spook School Tape

The Spook School are a young, hungry Edinburgh band with something to prove. They are four hip indie gun-slingers with a raucous attitude and mean chops. The Spook School will annoy your parents, and may well chuck your VCR out the upstairs window of your house.

Actually, none of this is true. The Spook School are - in fact - a largely wholesome, friendly and decent group of folks (apart from their reprobate drummer). After wowing the Indietracks festival audience last summer with a rough-hewn set of scuzzy but sensitive indie pop in the sunshine, this Edinburgh quartet have gone from strength to strength. Newly signed to London pop's quintessential record label Fortuna (home to Allo Darlin', Herman Dune and many other legends), they will be putting out their debut LP later this year.

In the meantime, there's this tape. Recorded at their gig supporting The Just Joans in June 16th, this limited edition release documents a band in rough, exuberant form, with 'History', 'Camerman' and 'Devil Of Mine' highlights. It also documents the 'unique' banter of drummer Niall.

Team Unpop are very excited indeed to be guest-DJing at How Does It Feel To Be Loved in London!

8 Canterbury Crescent, Brixton, SW9 7QD,

London, 9pm-2.30am, map of the venue is here

HDIF is a night that has served as an inspiration for us; we love what they do and we are very honoured to be a part of the night at the Canterbury Arms on the 7th June.

So, if you are an unpopper in London, be sure to come along and say hi. We will be tearing up the dancefloor with a pure indiepop set alongside Ian's mix of indiepop, northern soul, tamla motown, girl groups and sixties heartbreak. There will be so much shimmying, we're giddy just thinking about it already!

Besides which, if you are one of the first fifty folk through the door, there will be free unpop mixtapes and badges for you. What more could you really wish for?

The Spook School

Unpop are very excited to bring you a night of awesome indiepop from Edinburgh's very own The Spook School!

Newly signed to Fortuna Pop! and hotly anticipated to do great things, they have been variously described as "particularly cute and particularly addictive", "catchy as hell" and as being the way "you always want Belle and Sebastian to sound like, but they never do" (whatever the chuff THAT means).

In any case, if you like intelligent raucous noisy indiepop and you aren't afraid of topless moustachioed drummers propositioning you, you should come and see for yourself quite why this superb little band have stirred up such an ardent following for themselves over the past few months.

Support comes from The Occasional Flickers and Colin's Godson and all in all it should be an excellent evening. We look forward to seeing you there.

Only £4.00

Includes free entry to the Egg afterwards where Unpop will be the guest DJ's.

Unpop in Glasgow 3!

Saturday 27th of April

Blackfriars
36 Bell Street

10.30pm to 3am
£4, mixtapes, badges and cake for early arrivals!

Aye, that's right; Unpop is going West once again. We had so much fun the last time we put on a night in Blackfriars, we had to come back and do it all over again. There will be cake, there will be mixtapes, there will be so very much indiepop dancing action. There will probably be a cavalcade of cardigans and gingham mittens.

We like:

Veronica Falls - Belle & Sebastian - Orange Juice - Jens Lekman - Bearsuit - Tullycraft - The Pains of Being Pure At Heart - Allo Darlin' - The Fall - The Magnetic Fields - The Hidden Cameras - Neutral Milk Hotel - Hefner - Stereolab - Helen Love - Acid House Kings - The Field Mice - Felt - Bis - Standard Fare - Architecture In Helsinki - The Pastels - The Flatmates - Jonathan Richman - The Smiths - Talulah Gosh, Kenickie - Mates of State - Stereo Total - & Other twee nonsense...

Unpop also likes Glasgow.

If that sounds like your cup of tea then we very much hope to see you on the 27th April when we will be breaking from tradition and putting on a night on a Saturday instead of our usual Friday slot. Eek! That's right, we're so excited we're actually squeaking.

Wear your heart on your sleeve and shoes you can shimmy in. We reckon it's going to be good.

11pm to 3am - £4 entry

After a period of intensive festive reflection/gluttony/sloth, Unpop is back again to cajole your indie pop dancing feet onto the floor of the Wee Red Bar. As it falls on Friday the 15th of February, consider it a Valentine's Day hangover special. (Half) joking aside, you will have an ace time. You will hear songs you know and songs you mightn't have heard before. They will all be awesome!

We play pop hits of the highest order, inspired by cultural phenomena such as Glasgow's National Pop League, Indietracks and the C86 compilation.
